Putting for Patriots at Pirates Cove

Putting for Patriots graphic Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf, in Traverse City, Michigan, will host the Third Annual “Putting for Patriots” fundraiser on Sunday, May 24, 2009. This national event will occur simultaneously at 35 Pirate’s Cove, Pirate’s Island and Jungle Golf miniature golf courses throughout the United States.

Three non-profit agencies, who actively support and serve veterans, will be the beneficiaries during this Memorial Day Weekend event.  These organizations include: “Hope for the Warriors”, the “Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation” and “Homes for Our Troops.”  Pirate’s Cove, Jungle Golf and Pirate’s Island will donate a percentage of their total sales on Sunday, May 24.

In addition, throughout the entire holiday weekend, each golf course will accept donations to be turned over to the three charities.  “Memorial Day was specifically founded 140 years ago to remember those who died serving our nation,” notes Brad Graft, Pirate’s Cove Partner and Regional Director.  “The Pirate’s Cove family thought it appropriate to establish an annual event to serve charities that assist our living veterans – men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.” Pirate’s Cove and Pirate’s Island operate 35 miniature golf courses throughout the United States.

For more information, visit their website at www.piratescove.net.  Additional information on the above charities can be found by accessing their Web sites: www.hopeforthewarriors.orgwww.mcsf.org , and www.homesforourtroops.org.

Shop Men’s Night Downtown 12-18

Downtown Traverse City Features Men’s Night Shopping

Every year Downtown Traverse City hosts a special evening for all the men. The stores are open late and offer specials for all those last minute shoppers. With live entertainment, fashion shows, free hors d’oeuvres and drinks, who wouldn’t want to be there. I know my husband and his friends make it their annual tradition.

My advice to the ladies…make a wish list at Miner’s North, drop him off at Right Brain Brewery for a little pre-shopping libation, and don’t wait up! Guys, have fun tonight, and bring a designated driver.

Fun & Flotilla Party at Point Betsie Lighthouse

Celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Point Betsie Lighthouse on Monday August 4th

The founding settlers of Benzonia landed near Point Betsie and were greeted by the newly installed lighthouse keeper 150 years ago. To celebrate this anniversary there will be a beach party and evening show. Called the Fun & Flotilla Party because private boats will be welcomed to moor just off shore while all the rest of us landlubbers are invited to sit on the beach for a combined celebration of the extended Point Betsie community. The ceremony also features the U.S. Coast Guard, celebrating 218 years and the 20th anniversary of the Nature Conservancy’s Zetterberg Preserve at Point Betsie.

Guests are encouraged to come early, by land or water, and enjoy the beautiful beach. Pre-show begins The historic Mackinaw sailboat will be on display in the evening and a special Point Betsie art exhibit located in the Fog Signal Building will be open as well. Bring your blankets, enjoy some cake and punch, and settle in for the beachside presentation.

The program begins at 7:00pm and features the Coast Guard Zodiac off-shore. Set on a stage against the dunes with the Lighthouse as the backdrop, visitors will enjoy a reenactment of the settlers landing on the frankfort shores, music and songs and a reading from the Zetterberg family responsible for the donated land. With Mother Nature’s cooperation the evening will end with a beautiful sunset around 9:30pm.

Point Betsie Road will be closed to general traffic for the evening. Parking will be available at the Crystal Lake Yacht Club or in the empty Wynkoop property on the northwest corner of where Pt. Betsie road meets M-22. A shuttle will be available at no charge or you can walk to the beach. It is a bit of a hike, uphill on the way in, so keep that in mind if you choose to walk.

For more information about the Sesquicentennial events at Point Betsie Lighthouse contact the Friends of Point Betsie or visit their website. To learn about all the area lighthouses please visit our special Michigan Lighthouses page sponsored in part by Suzy Voltz of Century 21 Sleeping Bear Realty.

Northwest Michigan Fair Begins 8/3

Celebrate the 100th Year of the Northwest Michigan Fair August 3 – 9

Goin’ to the Fair, Goin’ to the Fair, Goin’ to the Northwest Michigan Fair. I’ve been hearing that banjo jingle for as long as I can remember. It’s like the chicken dance, you just can’t get it out of your head. So with 100 years to celebrate they’ve decided now it’s time for an upgrade. You can vote for the best version of the song from now until August 1st. The winner will be announced on TV 7&4 News at 5pm on August 1st. Watch their videos on the news then vote for your favorite on the TV 7&4 website here.

But the fair is much more than a jingle. It’s proud children exhibiting for 4-H. It’s amusement rides and cotton candy to entertain the child in us all. There are animals of all kinds to pet, ride and learn about. There’s the demolition derby, tough trucks, concerts, Bingo and even a queen’s coronation. Everyone loves a good county fair, and the Northwest Michigan Fair is one of the best.
