Explore the adventure that awaits on West Grand Traverse Bay.

Downtown Traverse City overlooks one of the region’s best attractions, the magnificent waters of West Grand Traverse Bay. It’s a playground for families, a safe harbor for ships, and a paradise for boaters of all kinds. Let’s explore some of the adventures that await on West Grand Traverse Bay. From Northport  on the Leelanau Peninsula to the lighthouse at Old Mission Point, this 75-mile coast is lined with secluded bays and small towns to moor and explore.

Traveling with small children? Families love these beaches with playscapes, restrooms and covered picnic areas. The splash pad and snack bar are popular summer attractions at Clinch Park, Traverse City’s central gathering place. Motor in to Duncan L Clinch Marina, a full-service harbor with marine gas, transient slips, and a few spots along the wall to tie up for a walk downtown. Make waves on a jet ski or cruise along the beaches. Waterfront hotels including the Bayshore Resort have an on-site boat rentals available for your convenience.

For day trippers ready to launch West Bay has several public sites. Elmwood Township Marina is conveniently close to town and can handle vessels of all sizes. From here you can pass by Red 8, wave at the Tall Ship Manitou, or grab a bite at a restaurant with a view. For waterfront dining in Traverse City, you’re on the right bay.

A trip to Power Island is a must for any West Bay cruise. Less than seven miles by boat from downtown this historic 200 acre park was once owned by Henry Ford. Today it’s host to hikers, campers, and swimmers. On a weekday morning, you might have the beach to yourself while weekenders tie up in rows.

West Bay has been a vital port since Traverse City’s early lumber days. It’s a boater’s wonderland and so much more. It’s a play site for children, a training site for maritime officers, and a resting place for several ships who lie upon this sandy floor. No matter how you spend your day, you’ll find plenty to explore. The lakes and bays of northern Michigan hold a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. There’s nothing better than a view of the water, except the view from the water.
