Discover the calm, clear waters of Long Lake.
In the northwest corner of Grand Traverse County you’ll find Long Lake, the largest inland lake entirely inside the County. Known for clear waters warmed quickly by the summer sun Long Lake is one of the region’s most popular cottage communities. Let’s take a look at what makes Long Lake so appealing.
Top choice for water enthusiasts Long Lake offers two boat launches. There are two public beaches on the northern end of the lake, with restroom facilities and picnic spots. A small dock near Taylor Park connects boaters with beach access. Across the street to Long Lake Grocery to fill your cooler or gas tanks. You can order a pizza for pickup, or better yet have it delivered to your boat! The best time on the water is spent exploring the lake.
There are five Islands on Long Lake with shallow sandbars perfect for spending an afternoon anchored with family or friends. No matter the wind direction you can always find a sheltered cove. Long Lake is popular year round for fishermen hoping for walleye, perch and pike. Bluegill, bass and sunfish will keep you casting with the kids when the clouds roll in. Look and listen for loons, geese and other bird species who nest nearby.
Here are a few tips to help you navigate the lake like a local. Boaters should watch carefully for shallow points which jut out well into the lake, including a shoal between Long and Fox Island with depths of only 10 feet. The deepest point of 86 feet lies near Long Island with other deep fishing holes in the northwestern bay and center of the southern end also. Boaters can access Ruth and Mickey lakes through narrow channels. The lakes and bays of northern Michigan hold a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. There’s nothing better than a view of the water, except the view from the water.
